Single phase electric motors

General information

Single phase asynchronous electric motors are typically designed for domestic use. For their operation, a residential voltage of 230V 50Hz on one phase is sufficient. Single-phase electric motors are typically low power, typically less than 2.2 kW. Since 1-phase electric motors cannot generate a rotating magnetic field when switched on, they require an auxiliary coil and capacitor. These components are part of the electric motor. However, single-phase motors only deliver about 40% of their rated torque at start-up, so an additional starting capacitor is required to start under load.
